Experimental video relates to “Avant-garde” media, meaning it’s innovative and not the usual mainstream. Experimental filmmakers typically use techniques that would normally be considered unacceptable or slow motion and out of focus. Many early Avant-garde filmmakers were inspired by Surrealism (dreams and sub-conscience mixed with reality).

Video #1: Dana Birnbaum- Wonder Woman (1978)
The artist uses film and somewhat utilizes sound design in this experimental video. The video is a montage featuring Wonder Woman and frequently glitches and rewinds for a more dramatic, intense feel.
I chose to research this video because I thought the editing techniques and repetition was very interesting. I also thought it was very strange how the creator, Dana Birnbuam, was inspired by the glorification of sexuality and violence on TV in the 1970’s, when it’s even more extreme on television today.
There are various elements and principles of design present throughout the video. Color is utilized seeing as the video is in full color and each transition features a fiery explosion featuring bursts of warm colors before the next scene appears.
A connection I have to my own life experiences is that I used to watch many of the Marvel superhero movies when I was a child. Although the clips used in this video are from the Wonder Woman television program that was broadcasted before I was born, I really enjoyed many of the Marvel heroes including Spiderman and Batman.
Sound and music are important in this video because the artist loops certain sound effects over and over to provide emphasis on certain clips.
Video #2: FilmCow- Charlie the Unicorn (2008)
The artist uses animation in this video.
I chose to research this video because I remember it being extremely popular when I was in elementary school.
There are various elements and principles of design present throughout the animated film. Color is utilized seeing as the animation is in color and not black and white. Shape is also utilized seeing as the characters and backgrounds are all drawn out with basic shapes and have little detail. Texture is utilized within the grass seeing as you can point out the individual strands of grass in the field.
A connection I have to my own life experiences is that my friends used to play this video all the time when we were younger because they thought it was humorous.
Both sound and music are important throughout this video. There are voiceovers from actors playing the unicorns and there is background music to set the scene.
Video #3:
Nolan Alexander- The Trip (2010)
The artist uses film and strange psychedelic glitches and effects for this experimental video.
I chose to research this video because I am very fascinated by optical illusions and psychedelic visual effects.
There are various elements and principles of design present throughout the experimental video, however the most noticeable element would definitely have to be color. Color is utilized during the video, as the creator uses various filters to make ordinary objects and scenery transform into vibrant, neon colors. Another element that is utilized near the end of the film is texture. In one of the final scenes, the creator uses a filter or film effect to make the scenery appear as if it was drawn out by hand and it looks as if it has a very rough, scribbly texture.
A connection I have to my own life experiences is that I once stumbled upon a video on Youtube that was intended to be an LSD trip simulator, and the effects it had on my eyes look sort of similar to the effects used in this video.
While there are no sound effects in the video, there is background music playing throughout.
Video #4: Samuel Kiehoon Lee- "Power Transformer"
1. The artist uses film and mirror effects for this experimental video. 2. I chose to research this video because I was intrigued by the image preview while scrolling through videos on Youtube. 3. There are various elements and principles of design that appear in this experimental video, however the most prominent two would have to be shape and color. The shape of the smoke cloud slowly changes throughout the film and the colors and tints of the smoke also progress. 4. I don't really have any connection to my own life experiences, however this video is very interesting and soothing to watch. 5. There are no significant sound effects in the video, however there is creepy background music that reminds me of old science fiction movies.
